FSc Chemistry Book1, CH 10, LEC 13; Standard Hydrogen Electrode (SHE)

2015-05-07 8

This video lecture from Electrochemistry (F.Sc. first year Chemistry) covers the standard hydrogen electrode (SHE). This cell consists of a platinum foil coated with finely divided platinum black and is suspended in a I Molar HCl solution. To maintain the shortage of hydrogen gas which is lost as a result of proton of HCl undergoing reduction, pure hydrogen gas at one atm pressure is continuously bubbled into the solution. The potential of this electrode is arbitrarily assumed to be zero and helps in identification of the electrode potential of another metal when attached to this half cell.
