Bolivia Seeks Sea Access in Int'l Court

2015-05-05 7

Bolivia has taken its long-standing demand for access to the sea to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague. The country lost its coastline to Chile in the War of the Pacific (1879-1883). Currently, La Paz must pay transportation costs but not tariffs for its exports sent via Chilean ports. Chilean lawyers argued that the ICJ does not have jurisdiction in the case while President Michele Bachelet said the country's case was strong, based on the 1904 treaty signed by Bolivia. In the Netherlands to oversee the case, Bolivian President Evo Morales emphasized the support for La Paz's position from the UN and the OAS. teleSUR
