OAKLAND, MARYLAND, IS A QUIET, PRISTINE TOWN LOCATED JUST MILES FROM THE POTOMAC RIVER IN THE APPALACHIAN MOUNTAINS.
FOUNDED IN 1849, OAKLAND WAS NAMED FOR THE MANY OAK TREES THAT DECORATE THE TOWN.
THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE B-N-O RAILROAD WAS INSTRUMENTAL IN THE EARLY GROWTH OF OAKLAND, WHICH SERVED AS A STOP IN THE COUNTRY’S FIRST COMMON CARRIER RAILROAD.
The B&O Railroad played a very important role in the early resort development of Garrett County & Oakland. The railroad brought travelers from the more urban areas of Maryland & Washington DC to Oakland for the cool mountain air, clean water & scenic beauty. Early visitors were presidents; Grover Cleveland, William McKinley, & Benjamin Harrison.
OAKLAND IS ALSO HOME TO A RECENTLY RESTORED 1884 TRAIN STATION, WHICH NOW SERVES AS THE B-N-O MUSEUM.
LOCATED IN HERITAGE SQUARE, THE MUSEUM IS COMPLEMENTED BY THE GARRETT COUNTY TRANSPORTATION MUSEUM & THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY MUSEUM.
