A verdict in a symbolic trial involving emblematic labor cases is expected to be delivered on May 1, International Workers’ Day. Ledy Monzobite became a union organizer after experiencing exploitation as a household worker. She is now working with an unofficial tribunal that has recently heard cases from Chile, Ecuador, Colombia, Bolivia and Peru. A Cuban delegate spoke of testimony regarding the high degree of job informality in these countries where there is employment, but without legal protection. In other sectors, there is a high rate of part-time work and precarious labor conditions. At the Tribunal, testimony was also given about murders of construction workers, sexual harassment of domestic workers, long hours of work and lack of overtime pay for textile workers, and a generalized lack of labor rights for agricultural workers. teleSUR
