Interviews from Caracas – Armenian Genocide

2015-04-29 1

Today our host Cody Weddle speaks with two members of the Armenian Apostolic Church in Caracas about the Armenian genocide committed a hundred years ago by the Ottoman Empire in what is now Turkey. Lucía Devletian and Marcos Zarikian tell us that in a massacre designed to eliminate the Armenian population, over a one and a half million men, women and children were killed. Our guests respond to questions about the motives for the genocide, how it was carried out, the destiny of the half a million people who survived, the incorporation of the small country of Armenia into the Soviet Union, the independent country that exists today, the Armenian diaspora, and the 3,000 Armenian families that now live in Caracas. Our guests also discussed the need for the world to recognize the Armenian genocide, as 43 countries have done; the recent recognition by Pope Francis; and the need for the Turkish government to do follow suit. teleSUR
