Nuclear Protest: Drone carrying radioactive material found on Shinzo Abe's office roof

2015-04-28 1

A remote control drone with a minuscule quantity of radioactive material was found on the roof of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's office on Wednesday, Reuters reported.

The drone was marked with a radioactive sign and was carrying a camera and a water bottle.

When an employee found it, at around 10:30 am, he covered it with a cardboard box, then police and security officials arrived at the scene and covered it under a blue tarpaulin. The drone was eventually carried away inside a box.

The levels of radioactive cesium that emanated from the drone were found to be too low to cause real harm to humans. The contents of the bottle haven't been revealed.

A police investigation is now underway.

According to RT, a possible explanation could be found in the Japanese government decision to reopen nuclear facilities, which after the 2011 Fukushima disaster, sparked disapproval among citizens.

On Wednesday, a Japanese court approved the restart of a nuclear power station in the southwest of the country.

In Japan, unlike other countries, there are no regulations on flying drones and various models of drones are widely available in shops across the country.
