Mistaken identity: Mexican girl returned home after being forcibly sent to the US

2015-04-28 1

A 14-year-old girl who was forcibly taken from her school in Guanajuato, Mexico by federal agents and flown to the U.S. last Thursday in a case of mistaken identity was reunited with her parents on Wednesday.

According to Dorotea Garcia, her daughter, Alondra Garcia, was kidnapped by her father, Reynaldo Díaz, and taken to Mexico in 2007.

In March this year, Garcia traveled to Guanajuato and identified Alondra Luna Nunez as her daughter after an eight-year search. Alondra was forcibly taken by federal police last Thursday even after the family insisted it was a case of mistaken identity.

Nunez was then flown to Houston, Texas before being flown back to Mexico a week later after DNA testing showed that Nunez was not related to Garcia. The case of mistaken identity seems to hinge on the fact that both girls were named Alondra, and that Nunez's father had met Reynaldo in Houston before.

Alondra was returned home in good condition but the family said it is not ruling out taking legal action against officials and the judge who sanctioned the operation.
