Italian police arrested ten people on Friday and were seeking eight others suspected of belonging to a group linked to al Qaeda that planned an attack on the Vatican.
The suspects are all Pakistani and Afghan nationals. They were arrested in early morning raids across Italy, according to Reuters. The men were suspected of being part of a group that had protected al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.
The group were mainly plotting attacks in Pakistan, Afghanistan but phone taps revealed that the Vatican was also a target in the past, Reuters reported. It was revealed that there was a plan for a suicide attack in a crowded place.
"We don't have proof, we have strong suspicion," Reuters quoted Mario Carta, head of the police unit on the case as saying.
Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi said the disclosures of the hypothetical attacks were not a matter for concern, according to Reuters.
