Italians are celebrating the 70th anniversary of Liberation Day.

Ceremonies are being held to mark the uprising against the Nazis and their Fascist allies in 1945.

President Sergio Mattarella lay a wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier in Rome.

Within days of the uprising, Benito Mussolini was captured and killed.

He was hanged along with his mistress in a square in Milan.

April 25 is an annual public holiday in Italy.
