Honduras: Protests Demand Release of Jailed Peasant Leader

2015-04-23 1

Honduran social organizations held a demonstration Wednesday outside the country's Supreme Court to demand the release of a peasant leader, "Chabelo" Morales, who they charge was unjustly imprisoned. As a result of a struggle against the eviction of peasant farmers in August 2008, in which 11 deaths occurred, Morales was convicted of killing Carlos Manrique, a relative of a police official, even though evidence indicates he was not at the scene of the events. On April 10, Morales was sentenced to 17 years in prison. His case has become one of the best known examples of repression against the Honduran campesino movement. In defending their land, unarmed peasant farmers face armed guards hired by landowners and defended by the authorities. Gerardo Torres reports from Tegucigalpa. teleSUR
