Why does this man want his head transplanted?

Someone has to go first. So why not me?

That is the attitude of Valery Spiridonov who is hoping to have his head transplanted onto a different body in pioneering surgery.

In a wheelchair and suffering from a genetic muscle wasting disease, the 30-year-old Russian wants to take the risk for himself and for science.

“I am honest about my chances,” he said.

“ I know that such an operation could give me the possibility to continue my life further. And if the worst comes to the worst, if that doesn’t happen, I will be the source of a lot of post-surgical data that will help doctors in the future carry out this procedure successfully.”

Despite ever increasing surgical breakthroughs, most medical experts denounce a human head transplant as sheer fantasy.

But Italian surgeon Sergio Canavero, is intent on making this operation happen.

And, whatever the outcome, willing volunteer Valery is lined up to make medical history.
