In Mexico, a newly released report published in Proceso magazine paints a picture of the police using excessive force and committing extrajudicial murders of unarmed civilians. The author of the report, journalist Laura Castellanos, said that she carried out an exhaustive investigation, interviewing 32 people and examining evidence that led her to the conclusion that federal police indiscriminately opened fire on unarmed civilians in Apatzingan, Michoacan. The tragic incident in which 16 people were shot and killed last January was first described as a clash between self-defense groups, but authorities now say they will reopen the case, as it is clear that police acted violently and arbitrarily against innocent people.
