Mexico: Migrant Caravan Calls Attention to Immigration Policies

2015-04-21 25

For the past week a caravan of Central American migrants has been passing through Mexico, denouncing Mexican and U.S. immigration policies. The 293 Central American migrants, accompanied by human rights activists and headed by Catholic priest and human rights advocate Alejandro Solalinde, charge that the Integral Southern Border Program approved in July 2014 will further militarize the country's border with Guatemala and criminalize migrants. Along its way, the Caaravan has been threatened by federal police and its participants have been beaten. Solalinde announced an injunction to prevent authorities from arresting and deporting the caravan participants. Clayton Conn reports from Mexico City. teleSUR
