Following a clash last week between the Colombian military and FARC guerrillas, which left 11 soldiers and two guerrillas dead, a peace delegation traveled to the rural Cauca region to clarify what really happened. After speaking to 300 residents, the team said that witness accounts contradict the official version of the Colombian Army commander who said that the defenseless soldiers were killed in their sleep. Witnesses say that fierce combat was going on at least six hours before their deaths. The peace delegation is expected to deliver a full report of its findings later this week as the 35th round of the peace talks comes to an end. The FARC and peace activists have insisted that a bilateral ceasefire is the road to peace. The peace delegation now warns that the government’s resumption of the bombing will lead to an escalation of the conflict and deeply affect the civilian population.
