On the 8th anniversary of the founding of the 12 member Union of South American Nations (UNASUR), the creation of the South American School of Defense is a major step forward to achieving regional integration. Although details on how the school will function are still being worked out, courses and post graduate degrees will be offered in defense studies. With its focus on peace and democracy, the South American School of Defense represents a clear break with the U.S.-based School of the Americas, ridden by torture scandals.
