The Nicaraguan government has denied accusations that it has caused environmental damage to an island disputed by Costa Rica. The Nicaraguan ambassador to the Netherlands told the International Court of Justice in The Hague that Costa Rica had failed to provide evidence of damage to the protected wetlands on the island located at the mouth of the San Juan River as a result of dredging operations for the new transoceanic canal. The island has been in dispute since 1858. teleSUR
