The environmental protection group Oceana has filed a lawsuit against the U.S. National Marine Fisheries Service over its lax regulations and enforcements of laws protecting endangered sea turtles from commercial shrimp fishing operations in the southeast region of the country.

A lawsuit has been filed by an environmental group to limit the number of sea turtle deaths and injuries caused by shrimping companies in the southeastern U.S.

Oceana is claiming that the National Marine Fisheries Service has breached the Endangered Species Act by allegedly being lax about protecting the turtles which are on the endangered list.

As a result, the group is asking the agency to reduce the number of turtle casualties allowed during shrimping operations around the Gulf of Mexico and lower Atlantic region and to be more vigilant that the regulations in place are being followed.

According to Oceana, over 53,000 sea turtles are killed and more than 500,00
