Venezuelans and Cubans are celebrating the twelfth anniversary of the flagship healthcare probram Barrio Adentro. Former Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez initiated the program along with Cuban medical specialists in 2003. The program began in poor communities where few Venezuelan doctors were willing to work. Millions of Venezuelans have benefitted from free, high-quality medical services available close to their homes. More than 30,000 Cuban professionals continue to work in the program. teleSUR
