Typhoon Phanfone: US airman dead and 2 are missing after wave sweeps them out to sea off Okinawa

2015-04-14 3

A United States Air Force airman was killed and two are missing after being swept out to sea by Typhoon Phanpone as it hit the Japanese island of Okinawa.

Japanese police said the three men were on a beach in Okinawa taking pictures when a powerful washed them out to sea.

One of the men’s bodies was found by Japanese and American rescue helicopters. The other two remain missing.

The U.S. Air Force said in a statement the names of the airmen are being withheld pending notification of their relatives.

The typhoon also caused several injuries and power outages for more than 9,500 homes on Kyushu island.

It has also seen more than 600 flights canceled at Tokyo's Haneda and Narita airports and the suspension of bullet train services between Tokyo and Osaka due to heavy rain.

Japan’s meteorological agency said that, at one point, the storm packed winds of up to 110 miles per hour, the New York Times reported.

Phanpone is now nearing Honshu, bringing heavy rains and forcing officials to suspend the search for bodies on Mount Ontake following the volcanic eruption last weekend.
