Equipment and arms from the United States and China have found their way into the hands of Islamic State fighters, according to a project funded by the European Union that conducted a field survey of the sources of weapons used by the jihadist group.

Islamic State militants seized and weapons and munitions when they overran a Syrian air force base near Hama last year. Other munitions were reportedly obtained from from black-market deals with rival Islamists.

According to the European research, more than 80 percent of nearly 2,000 cartridges captured or collected from Islamic State militants were manufactured in China, the former Soviet Union, post-Soviet Russia, Serbia and the U.S.
