Ship Adrift: Russian cargo ship loses power and drifts toward Canadian island

2015-04-14 11

The Russian cargo ship Simushir, carrying at least 400 tons of fuel oil, 50 tons of diesel, plus chemicals and equipment for mining operations, lost power late Thursday night, running adrift in waters off the Canadian Province of British Columbia.

By Friday evening a large Canadian Coast Guard vessel had secured a tow line to the ship, but the line broke. Two other tow lines also snapped.

Despite the breakages, the towing attempts did manage to move the cargo ship from just 14 kilometers of the coast to a safer 46 kilometers as of Saturday night.

Ten crew members remain on the stricken vessel but the captain was airlifted from the ship after suffering unspecified injuries.

Following the unsuccessful attempts by the larger Canadian Coast Guard vessel, a smaller tugboat was dispatched on Saturday, October 18, that will hopefully secure and direct the cargo ship.
