CY Leung, chief executive of Hong Kong, has been trying to hold the city together since pro-democracy protests broke out in the streets of Hong Kong nearly a month ago.
Demonstrators are demanding real democratic elections, instead of Hong Kong’s current system -- which only lets voters to select from a limited number of candidates who are vetted by a committee in Beijing.
The protests have turned increasingly violent despite the talks China has held with the Hong kong Federation of Students.
On Monday, CY Leung held a small foreign press conference -- the first since the protests began. He backed Beijing’s official position that free elections could never be possible.
He said: "If it's entirely a numbers game and numeric representation, then obviously you'd be talking to the half of the people in Hong Kong who earn less than US$1,800 a month.”
His comment reflects an attitude shared by Hong Kong’s elite, that the general public are unable to govern themselves. The idea is that your monthly income reflects your level of intelligence.
Many middle-class and blue-collar workers have joined the protests in Hong Kong. Some of them were CY Leung’s supporters just 2 years ago when he took office.
Mr. He, one of CY Leung’s former supporters says, “I regret that I ever even shook his hand.” He says the chief executive should represent Hong Kong’s best interests, instead of acting as a mouthpiece for Beijing, and that the government has a responsibility to take care of the weak and poor.
Mr. He says, “If a government cannot care for its less fortunate citizens, then what good is it?”
