Newly released security footage shows Michael Zehaf-Bibeau’s arrival after he opened fire on guards at Ottawa’s war memorial. He parked his brown Toyota Corolla in front of the East Block entrance on Wellington Street before he ran onto the parliament grounds.

Bystanders scattered at the sight of Bibeau and his weapon, which is believed to have been a 30-30 lever action rifle.

The suspect then ran to one of the minister’s vehicles that was occupied by a driver. Bibeau then demanded at gunpoint for the driver to exit the vehicle to which the driver complied. The suspect then drove towards Center Block in the minister’s vehicle.

Security personnel were aware of the suspicious activity and were in close pursuit of the shooter as Bilbeau arrived at the entrance of the parliament building. He ditched the the vehicle and made his way inside the building on foot.

Bilbeau exchanged fire with officers and was fatally wounded by Canadian Parliament’s Sergeant-at-Arms, Kevin Vickers.

The suspect was said to have converted to Islam about 10 years ago but had recently shifted to a more radical approach to the religion. Bilbeau arrived in Ottawa on Oct. 2 to sort out an issue with his passport. It’s believed the 32-year-old shooter had intentions of traveling to Syria.
