UK hostage John Cantlie spent years as a war correspondent before being captured by Syrian militants in 2012.
Now, however, Cantlie has become ISIS’s official media correspondent, offering reports from the besieged Syrian border town of Kobani.
The new video from ISIS shows the group has significantly stepped up its video production capabilities, with slick graphics and even shots from a drone.
The video goes on for five full minutes, but its purpose is clear: to counter western media reports that ISIS is on the backfoot in Kobani.
John Cantlie is a hostage and obviously under duress and he may not even know that his father, who recently issued an emotional plea for his son’s release, passed away last week.
John Cantlie in all likelihood is doing what he’s doing to avoid the fate of several other western journalists who had their heads cut off by a thug in black.
A more interesting question might be why ISIS is making slick news videos. Who are they for? Does ISIS truly have the upper hand, or are they so desperate the only weapon they have left is propaganda?
