Former baseball star Jose Canseco was in surgery Tuesday night after accidentally shooting his own hand while cleaning his gun.
Canseco, 50, was reportedly cleaning his four licensed guns in his home in Las Vegas on Tuesday. His fiancee, model Leila Knight, said he had forgotten there was a bullet left in his Ruger pistol.
Knight said his middle finger was barely attached when she wrapped it and called an ambulance.
Canseco later tweeted: “Got no sleep. Hope I can keep my finger but grateful it wasn’t something worse.”
It is unclear whether he will undergo a second surgery.
Canseco is famous for a 1993 blooper play, in which he let up a home run when a baseball bounced off his head and flew over the fence.
He is also the co-author of a 2005 book about the pervasiveness of steroids in professional baseball.
