‘Bin Laden shooter’ Navy SEAL: Rob O’Neill of SEAL Team Six says he killed Osama bin Laden

2015-04-14 1

Rob O’Neill has been identified as the Navy SEAL who shot and killed Osama bin Laden.

O’Neill is scheduled to give an interview to Fox News later this month to describe how he killed bin Laden and why he is giving up his anonymity.

Rob O’Neill, 38, is a former member of SEAL Team Six who has been portrayed in such Hollywood blockbusters as include Zero Dark Thirty, Captain Phillips and Lone Survivor.

In O’Neill’s account of the bin Laden shooting, he was the SEAL who killed bin Laden at close range with three shots to his forehead during their raid on the Al Qaeda leader’s compound in Pakistan on May 2, 2011.

O’Neill says the reason he is breaking his code of silence is because he lost some of his military benefits because he quit after 16 years of service instead of staying on for a full 20 years of service.

In total, O’Neill was deployed on more than a dozen tours of duty in active combat in four different warzones, including Iraq and Afghanistan. During those tours he undertook more than 400 separate combat missions. He was decorated 52 times.

O’Neill’s plans to come out publicly as the shooter has not made the special-forces community or the U.S. Military particularly happy.

O’Neill’s tale is disputed by other sources. Matt Bissonnette, another SEAL who participated in the raid, says he killed bin Laden. According to another, an unnamed “point man” who will not speak with the media first shot bin Laden before tackling two of bin Laden’s wives to shield the other SEALs in the event that the women were wearing suicide vests. Bissonnette and O’Neill then pumped more bullets into the now-dying bin Laden.
