Violent video games: media violence not related to real-life violence, study finds

2015-04-14 29

A new study looking into the effects of violent movies and video games on real-life violence has found no long term links.

Psychologist Christopher Ferguson conducted two studies into media violence at Stetson University in Florida. The first study looked at the link between U.S. homicide rates between 1920 and 2005 and instances of violence depicted in movies. Ferguson’s team found a moderate correlation between motion picture violence and real-life violence in the 1950s. However, this reversed during the rest of the century. Violence in movies was inversely related to homicide rates in the 1990s.

The second study looked at the relationship between sales of violent video games and youth violence rates over the previous 15 years. The study found that playing video games coincided with a decline in violent crimes among kids aged 12 to 17.

The study also disagreed with previous methodologies used in studies that found connections between real-life violence and screened violence. The main criticism was that they relied primarily on flawed laboratory testing.

The results should be welcome news for kids and video game makers alike. On the flip side, gun companies no doubt will most likely be pushing for less violence in video games from now on.
