There are plenty of happy, healthy vegans — people who consume no animal products of any kind: no milk, no meat, no honey, no fish. None of that.
Sarah Markham, a Florida mother of an infant, is a vegan. But Sarah’s breast milk wasn’t cutting it for her newborn baby boy, who was found to be dehydrated and underweight, so much so that he’d lost some 10 percent of his body weight.
So a judge ordered Markham to take the kid to a hospital and follow a doctor’s advice. The doctor had previously prescribed infant formula — the kind that contains cow’s milk — to supplement Sarah’s vegan breast milk.
But instead of listening to a medical professional, Sarah decided to feed her malnourished kid vegan soy formula. The child’s health only deteriorated, prompting authorities to take the baby from his militant vegan mom.
Now Sarah Markham is in court trying to get her kid back and looking at possible criminal charges.
