Poor Indian women died of botched operations after being paid to be sterilized

Botched sterilizations at a cancer and research centre have raised concerns over negligence by doctors performing such operations on poor women in India.

Eighty-three women were paid 1,400 rupees, or $23, last Saturday, to undergo tubal sterilizations, or tubectomies, at a government health camp in the Nemichand Jain Cancer and Research Centre, an abandoned private hospital at Pendari village in the Bilaspur district of India’s central Chhattisgarh state.

Only one surgeon, identified as R R K Gupta, who received financial incentives to perform the operations, was on duty. With one assistant and using rusty equipment, the doctor performed the 83 operations in a few hours, well above the government quota of 30 per day.

A tubectomy is a surgical procedure to either clamp and block both fallopian tubes with clips, or cut them and tie the ends.”

More than 50 of the women have been hospitalized, and 20 are in critical condition, suffering from giddiness, vomiting, drops in pulse rate, blood poisoning, or haemorrhagic shock. Thirteen of the women have died.

According to local reports, Gupta operations blamed the deaths and hospitalizations on medicine given to the women after the procedures.

India’s sterilization campaign is part of a long-running effort to curb the country’s growing population.
