Rosetta Mission: Philae lander conducts tests and sends crucial comet data back to Earth before bat

2015-04-14 5

Despite a bumpy landing, the Philae probe has transmitted important data about Comet 67P back to Earth before its batteries died on Saturday.

The landing of Philae took an unexpected turn when it bounced twice after its first touchdown on Comet 67P on Wednesday. The probe has now anchored itself against a cliff. The shadows make recharging Philae’s batteries difficult.

But before going into hibernation, the Philae lander managed to drill into the comet’s surface. If Philae detects chiral amino acids, it will be a great leap forward as such chemicals are only detected in biological systems.

Philae also used its Consert instrument to send radar signals in an attempt to study the comet’s internal structure. Using its Rolis camera, the Philae lander took photos of the surface of the comet. The lander obtained other useful data by using other tools as well, including COSAC, Ptolemy and SD2.

To enable the solar panels absorb more sunlight, scientists raised Philae by four centimetres and rotated it 35 degrees.
