Three people were shot and wounded in a library at Florida State University early Thursday morning by a gunman who was later killed by police.
An estimated 200 to 300 students were in a packed Strozier Library, many studying for final exams. At around 12:30 a.m., the gunman fired at least four shots, wounding three people
Students were advised by the university’s emergency alert system to seek shelter away from doors and windows and call 911 only if they had been shot or had seen a person with a gun
Approximately 30 police officers converged on the scene and a group of officers ordered the gunman to put his gun down.
Instead, the gunman fired at the officers, Tallahassee Police spokesman Dave Northway said. The officers returned fire at least a dozen times, killing the gunman, said Chad Huling, a 21-year-old business student, in an interview with NBC News.
One victim is in critical condition and another is in stable condition at Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare hospital, a hospital spokeswoman said. The third victim was treated at the scene for a graze wound and released.
