US officials have begun to take more of an interest in Hong Kong's pro-democracy protests, which on Sunday marked their two-month anniversary.
The US Congressional Executive Commission on China held hearings on Thursday to discuss the future of human rights and democracy in Hong Kong.
Among the witnesses was Hong Kong's last British governor, Chris Patten, who despite signs of waning public support for the demonstrations noted that he thought the campaign would likely continue.
Both the hearing and a bipartisan bill, submitted to both the House of Representatives and the Senate last week and called on the government to support protester's demands for universal suffrage, have no doubt infuriated Chinese officials.
Whether or not they galvanize democratic activists, however, remains to be seen.
