The German Heart Institute has tested hundreds of pacemakers in metal detectors and found no problems. Still, most medical professionals recommend not walking through one if you have a pacemaker.
The issue was highlighted by the death of a 30-year-old Russian woman with a pacemaker over the weekend after electromagnetic waves from an airport metal detector caused her device to malfunction.
Maxim and Diana Tolstova showed security officers documents proving she had a pacemaker, but somehow she was still ushered through the metal detector.
A few minutes later they arrived at their boarding gate, and Diana began to feel unwell. She then collapsed and, a short time later, died, cradled in her husband’s arms.
