A Texas family is relieved after their young daughter came in contact with a dangerous mountain lion on a hunting trip.
Alyssa Caldwell, 12, was with her father, Joshua Caldwell, in the New Mexico mountains hunting for elk.
The two made set up a camp grounds near a waterhole in search for their prey.
After setting up a place to stay, the two continued to hunt when Alyssa’s father remembered he left his shooting sticks back at their tent.
The 12-year-old decided to stay where she was at when a huge wild cat approached her.
Alyssa quickly crouched on the ground and pulled out her shotgun aiming at the feline.
When the cat got about 5 yards from her, she realized it was a mountain lion.
Scared and frightened she shot the animal straight in the head before he could attack her.
Her father heard the fire of the gunshot go off and quickly ran back to his daughter.
They called game wardens and stayed with the animal until they confiscated the dangerous animal.
The game wardens allowed the Caldwell’s to continue to hunt because Alyssa shot the lion out of self defense.
In most states mountain lions are considered varmints.
Gaming laws allow hunters to shoot them these types of animals because they are considered threats to wildlife.
Two days later, the father daughter team caught their prize elk and Alyssa got to take home the animal.
