Police Brutality: Hong Kong Chief CY Leung says ‘impatient’ cops OK to beat protesters

2015-04-14 14

Court injunctions filed last week and this week seeking to clear protesters from Hong Kong’s streets were filed on behalf of taxi and bus companies.

There has been little acknowledgement of the protesters from the Hong Kong and Chinese governments beyond one meeting held with student leaders earlier this month. Additional requests for a meeting have been ignored by government officials.

Last week, as protesters and police fought on the streets of Hong Kong, CY Leung took a trip to South Korea to look at its creative industries. After his return on Monday, Leung told protesters that they shouldn’t complain about police officers and their methods. Even the patience of the police would run out eventually and anyone’s patience would be tested after two months of protests, he said.

But we disagree, as video after video shows police officers kicking, punching, beating and pushing protesters, even as they are already leaving the sites. They’re just not moving fast enough for police, and those that fail to move fast enough are often thrown to the ground and arrested. Some students clumped together in confusion and for protection as police descend on them with batons.

Yet, Hong Kong government officials ask that protesters go home and patiently wait for a response from China’s government. A response which will never come.

Police insist that they are the victims of violent protesters and have compiled a small collection of ‘weapons’ confiscated from protesters they arrested.
