A Denver police officer is in critical condition after a driver struck him and three other officers Wednesday afternoon along East Colfax Ave.
The accident happened during a demonstration involving hundreds of students from East High School, who walked out late Wednesday morning to show support for Ferguson protesters.
The officers had been escorting the students, according to police. They were biking along the sidewalk toward downtown, when a black mercedes suddenly ran a red light at the corner of High Street and East Colfax Ave.
The driver reportedly drove up onto the sidewalk, narrowly missing a woman who was waiting for the bus.
The mercedes struck all four officers on bikes. One officer, identified as 9-year-veteran John Adsit, got caught underneath the car.
The Mercedes dragged him about half a block before crashing into an SUV parked in a Taco Bell parking lot.
Police have not confirmed what made the driver speed through the stoplight and strike the officers on the sidewalk, but they did say the man had a medical condition.
Witnesses speculated the driver had a medical episode, causing him to lose control of the vehicle.
Everyone involved in the accident was taken to Denver General Hospital. The driver and three of the officers were released later that day.
As of Thursday morning, Adsit was undergoing a second surgery.
