New marijuana breathalyzer is a completely different drug test from what we’ve seen before

Several companies across North America are developing a marijuana breathalyzer that would test positive or negative for THC, the drug’s psychoactive component.

Kal Malhi, founder of Cannabix Technologies, Inc. said his company is hoping to test their breathalyzer prototype within the next few months.

According to Malhi, a marijuana breathalyzer works differently from current tests, which require blood or urine samples. Those tests can be inaccurate because they detect the cannabinoids present in a person’s bloodstream, which can still be active weeks after smoking.

THC, on the other hand, remains in the lungs for about two hours after smoking, meaning a breathalyzer should show a positive result only if the person has smoked within the last few hours.

Malhi said his company’s current model would only display a positive or negative result, but that future models could test for the actual level of THC. The current limit set for drivers is 5 nanograms of marijuana per milliliter of blood.

Other companies, such as Dragerwerk and Lifeloc Technologies, are developing similar devices. Lifeloc Technologies, a Colorado-based company, recently received a $250,000 grant to produce a breathalyzer for police departments.

In an interview with TomoNews, Malhi said he didn’t want to put a “hard date” on his company’s finished product, but that he hopes to have the breathalyzer on the market by next summer.

He said his former work as a police officer prompted him to develop a device that would meet the need for an accurate marijuana test and noted that he hopes it will deter smokers from driving while high.
