Japan war crimes: PM Abe refutes history of ‘comfort women’ by attacking liberal news agency

2015-04-14 2

Asahi Shimbun, Japan’s second largest daily newspaper has issued a retraction and apology for misinformation contained in several articles printed in the 90’s. The articles cited a now discredited author who claimed to have captured comfort woman from Korea during WWII.

The journalist who wrote the article, Takashi Uemura, then 33, now 56 and a university division lecturer, has become the target for right-wing conservatives who call him a traitor for spreading ‘lies’ about Japan’s history. The target on his back has already cost him one university job.

Mr. Uemura and the newspaper Asahi Shimbun are now both being targeted by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s right-leaning government, which seeks to erase the memory of forced sex slavery from Japanese history.

Mr. Uemura says that The Asahi are too afraid to defend him or even themselves and that the conservative right is using this as a way to intimidate other news agencies and journalists into self-censorship. Advocates for former comfort women say a single discredited source doesn’t invalidate a mountain of evidence of Japanese war crimes.
