Death penalty controversy: Man takes 43 min to die in botched execution

2015-04-14 5

Clayton Lockett was convicted of murdering a 19-yr-old woman, Stephanie Neiman, by shooting and then burying her alive in 1999.

Lockett was scheduled to die by lethal injection so doctors used a combination of midazolam, vecuronium bromide, and potassium chloride in an experimental cocktail. The Oklahoma State Penitentiary had never used midazolam before in a lethal injection, the only other state to use the sedative in lethal injections is Florida, but Florida uses 5 times the amount Oklahoma administered to Lockett.

After Lockett was given the initial injection doctors noticed there was something wrong with the intravenous line and attempted to insert a second IV line. The doctor was sprayed with Lockett’s blood as he attempted to place the second line.

The execution was actually halted but Lockett died 43 minutes later from the initial cocktail.

Lockett’s death is controversial as death row inmates are now claiming that testing new cocktail combinations for lethal injections on them constitutes cruel and unusual punishment.
