Stem cell fraud: Haruko Obotaka forced to retract paper on STAP cells

2015-04-14 1

Riken Researcher Center has been forced to admit that they have been unable to reproduce STAP cells according to procedures outlined in researcher Haruko Obotaka’s report.

Obokata, the lead author in a pair of papers that claimed to have discovered an easier way to produce pluripotent stem cells, which are capable of developing into any type of tissue, through a process known as STAP.

The STAP cell reproduction instructions involved subjecting mouse cells to mildly acidic liquid.

The mouse spleen cells would glow green if a gene indicative of pluripotency was activated.

Obokata sometimes succeeded in creating the glowing cells, but only at a very low rate. She attempted to produce a mouse by injecting the cells into the fertilized eggs of another mouse but failed.

The inconsistencies in results and verification has led to allegations of data falsification and fabrication, leading to the papers being retracted by Riken.
