South Korea nuclear operator hacked: Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power data leaked

2015-04-14 16

In response to a recent hacking attack on South Korean nuclear plant operator Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power, the operator conducted a two-day safety drill at its plants throughout the country on Monday. The operator said the attack compromised ‘non-critical’ information.

Computer systems of Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power (KHNP) have been under attack by hackers. It is not yet clear who coordinated the attack, but a Twitter user who described himself to be the chairman of a Hawaii-based nuclear group claimed responsibility. The company has not verified the claim.

The cyber attack leaked personal information of 10,000 KHNP workers, designs of two reactors, electricity flow charts and other data.

KHNP said the attack did not affect the operation of the nuclear facilities and that it impossible to hack into the control system because it is “totally independent and closed”, a KHNP official told the Guardian.

A subsidiary of state-run Korea Electric Power Corp, KHNP runs a total of 23 nuclear reactors throughout South Korea, providing a third of South Korea’s electricity.

The attack came after North Korea allegedly hacked Sony Pictures over the portrayal of Kim Jong-un in the cancelled movie ‘The Interview’.
