Avatar: The Legend of Korra went off the air in a major way last Friday. The show’s final scene showed the main character, Korra, blushing and holding hands with her friend, and one of the protagonists in the show, Asami.
Now some die-hard fans have been “shipping” Korrasami for awhile — meaning they wanted to see the two characters as a couple in the show. Having same-sex characters in a “ship” is not uncommon in the otaku world, but what’s unprecedented is that the writers have made it cannon and broke an unwritten rule about showing alternative relationships on kid’s TV.
Both Bryan Bryan Konietzko and Mike DiMartino, creators of the popular series, confirmed they wrote it that way on purpose. In their blogs they say it wasn’t planned, like a lot of the other parts of the story’s arc, but that’s how life generally is. Some will love it, some will hate it.
Korra broke a lot of ground in other areas, too. She’s a minority lead character who has many weakness in spite of wielding enough power to literally move whole realms.
With gay marriage being legal in a lot of places, and alternative lifestyles being led out in the open more and more, both Konietzko and DiMartino felt sorry it took so long to represent it in their stories.
As far as animation is concerned, well this ain’t the first time its happened. So what’s the big deal anyway?
