Ah Ho, the hippopotamus that jumped out of a moving truck in Taiwan last week, has died at the age of 32.
After breaking and hitting a car on December 26, the gigantic animal was involved in another the next day when the wires of a hoist broke and his container fell 2 metres to the ground.
A crew of 20 veterinarians and investigators was sent by the Taipei Zoo look into the cause of Ah Ho’s death.
Taipei Zoo’s chief veterinarian Kuo Chun-wai said the hippo had a 40-centimeter wound on his diaphragm, which caused his right lung to slide into his intraperitoneal and led to lung necrosis. His liver and small intestine also had hemorrhages on their surfaces.
Taipei Zoo spokesman Tsao Shian-shao said Ah Ho did not receive any medical treatment before his death. “He must have suffered excruciating pain,” he added.
Ah Ho’s owner and his Skyhorse private ranch have been under investigation since the incident on December 26. The owner faces a $16,000 fine for animal abuse.
