A 17-year-old boy died after being attacked by a great white while spearfishing on Western Australia’s south coast.
Jay Muscat was bitten on the leg by a 5-meter long shark at Cheynes Beach, near Albany.
Authorities received reports of a body in the water at around 12:20 p.m. A fisherman is believed to have brought Muscat’s body to shore on a boat. When police arrived on the scene, they confirmed the teenager was dead.
Jay and friend Matt Pullella were spearfishing and had already caught some fish.
According to a post on Pullella’s Facebook, the shark first attacked him, but he was able to push it away. That’s when the shark attacked Jay and bit his leg. The shark then came back to attack Matt. Matt said he was able to get his speargun into the shark’s mouth and pull the trigger.
Authorities closed the beach and deployed drum lines in an attempt to catch the shark. The shark will be destroyed if it is caught.
