2015-04-14 97

A transgender Ohio teen has committed suicide, and her final words have become part of a national conversation on the treatment of transgender teens and the negative effects of gay conversion therapy.

On December 28, just before 2:30 a.m., Leelah Alcorn, born Josh, was struck and killed by a tractor-trailer on I-71 in Ohio, about four miles from her home in Kings Mills.

In a scheduled post on her blog entitled “Suicide Note” Alcorn detailed years of depression after rejection from her parents when she revealed at age 14, that she was transgender and wanted to live life as a girl.

"The only way I will rest in peace is if one day transgender people aren't treated the way I was, they're treated like humans, with valid feelings and human rights," Alcorn wrote.

Alcorn said her parents made her attend gay conversion therapy, an extremely controversial religious practice that has been banned in some US states, that seeks to turn gay teenagers into heterosexuals.

"My death needs to mean something," she wrote in the blog post.
