Airsoft gun shooting: San Francisco police kill man brandishing BB gun

2015-04-14 3

San Francisco police shot and killed a man near a police station on Sunday evening after he pulled what turned out to be a pellet gun.

Local media reports said a 32-year-old man had been loitering on 16th street earlier on Sunday, asking police officers what kind of firearms they carried. The officers involved ignored the man.

Then at around 5:20 p.m, three police officers asked the same man to leave the parking lot of Mission Police Station, a restricted area. The man began to walk away.

As the officers got into their vehicle, the man reportedly stopped at the entrance of the parking lot.

The officers exited their car and asked the man to leave again. They said the man then pulled a gun from his waistband, prompting two officers to fire three shots at him.

The man was taken to hospital where he was later pronounced dead. The officers checked the weapon after the shooting and found it was an airsoft, or pellet gun.

The sergeants involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave. The replica gun did not have an orange safety tip.

“We don't know his motive or why he challenged the officers or approached them in the first place," said San Francisco police Officer Albie Esparza. "It was very erratic behavior by the suspect, very unusual."

The identity of the man has not yet been released.
