China has lodged a formal diplomatic complaint to North Korea after a North Korean soldier crossed the border and killed four Chinese citizens in late December last year.
The 26-year-old runaway North Korean soldier crossed into the border township of Nanping in Helong City in China’s Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture on December 28, Yonhap News reported, citing an anonymous source.
According to reports in the Guardian and New York Times, the soldier broke into the home of an elderly ethnic Korean couple and shot them dead. He then entered another elderly couple’s home and beat them to death with his gun. He then stole 100 renminbi (US$16) and some food from a third house and wounded a villager there.
The Guardian said the soldier remains unconscious at a local hospital. Hua Chunying, China’s foreign ministry spokeswoman, said at a press conference on Monday that the Beijing had “lodged representations” to North Korea and “will handle the case in line with relevant laws.”
