ISIS militant group may have recruited a Japanese couple who disappeared after traveling to Turkey

A Japanese woman and her French husband, both around 20 years of age, have disappeared after traveling to Turkey in November. Japan’s National Security Bureau suspects the couple may have joined the militant group ISIS.

The couple are both Muslim and previously expressed that they were interested in joining ISIS to close friends and family.

The couple were interviewed by members of Japan’s National Security Bureau and said that they wished to travel to Syria to offer aid to refugees and orphans. They told the NSB that they had no intentions of joining ISIS but would travel to Turkey to visit the city of Istanbul as tourists.

Both the husband and wife had already quit their jobs, moved out of their rented apartment, and withdrawn their savings in preparation for the long trip.

The couple headed out from Haneda Airport and flew to Turkey where they traveled to a city called Gazientep in Syria. The couple has not been heard from since and Japan’s NSB said that they suspect they may have joined ISIS, but will continue to gather intelligence on the couple’s possible location.
