Frenchman linked to Charlie Hebdo attacker arrested in Bulgaria

A 29-year-old Frenchman arrested in Bulgaria while trying to enter Turkey reportedly had links to one of the Kouachi brothers who were behind the Charlie Hebdo attacks in Paris last week.

Fritz-Joly Joachin was arrested at a Bulgaria-Turkey border checkpoint on January 1, using a European arrest warrant alleging that he had abducted his three-year-old son and attempted to take him to Syria via Turkey, ABC News reported.

Joachin was reportedly in contact several times with one of the two brothers, Cherif Kouachi, before he left France on December 30, AFP reported.

Joachin’s wife said he converted to Islam 15 years ago and turned radical two years ago. She also said he planned to educate his child in a jihadist community, AFP reported.

However, Joachin told prosecutors that he was taking a holiday in Istanbul and told Bulgarian media that he was not a “radical or terrorist”, AFP reported.
