Washington D.C. Metro death: Woman dies after train engulfed in thick smoke

2015-04-14 2

A woman was killed and two others were in critical condition on Monday afternoon after a Washington DC subway train was engulfed in thick smoke.

A yellow line train came to a halt in a smoke-filled tunnel just after leaving L’Enfant Plaza Metro station. The smoke came in through the train doors, quickly filling the carriages. The driver told passengers not to open the doors.

Passengers sat or lay on the floor in an attempt to avoid breathing in the smoke. The driver told passengers that he would try to back the train up to the station but could not as another train was blocking the tracks.

Passengers trapped on board the train said emergency services took around 40 minutes to reach the scene.

Tunnel fans were later used to disperse the smoke. Train services on several lines of the Metro were disrupted by the incident.

At least 84 people were transported to hospital for treatment. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the smoke.
